Homegrown fashion lover Lidene Muller has always had a keen interest in style. This interest, coupled with her passion for helping others find and express their individual style, has led to the creation of her new venture, Colour Connection Styling. In celebration of South African Women’s Month we met up with this stylish female entrepreneur to find out what inspires her, and to get the lowdown on this season’s latest trends.
Where in South Africa were you born?
I was born in a small gold mining town in Gauteng called Nigel. I grew up in Bronkhorstspruit and later moved to Pretoria.
What brought you to Hong Kong and how long have you lived here?
Four years ago our family decided that it was time for a new adventure. We wanted to travel and explore living abroad, so my husband got a job in Hong Kong and we moved to Discovery Bay where we currently live.
What did you do before coming to Hong Kong?
I worked as a medical representative for a multinational pharmaceutical company in South Africa.
How did you decide on a career in image and style consulting?
I’ve always had an interest in clothes, fashion and wearing the right colours that complement and suit me best. Since I was little, I’ve been inspired by colour and clothing, and assembling outfits. I also used to work and rep with ladies who always dressed beautifully and that was a big source of inspiration for me. The colours and fashion of this beautifully vibrant city truly inspired me and ignited my Colour Connection Styling journey. I decided to take the plunge and went to South Africa to complete my Image, Style & Colour Qualification through The South African Image Academy. I’m so blessed to be part of the South African Image Academy and their sisterhood!
After completing my qualification I started my own image, style and colour consulting business called Colour Connection Styling and I’m really enjoying every moment of it! I believe that finding the perfect balance between colour, style and design allows and ‘connects’ you to express your individual style in everything – from your wardrobe to your lifestyle!
How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is timeless and expressive. I’m inspired by elegance.
Who is your style inspiration?
I have quite a few favourites! Some of my style inspirations and personalities include:
Olivia Palermo – her style is versatile but always elegant, timeless, tailored and polished.
Kate Beckinsale – she can wear anything so effortlessly – from top trends to jeans and a plain white top.
Jennifer Garner – not only is she one of my favourite actresses but she also looks amazing in both vibrant red carpet dresses and understated ‘off-duty’ looks.
Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert – the Queen of Street Style! I love her daring fashion personality and use of bright colours, clashing prints, lines and maximalist accessories.
Audrey Hepburn – her heartwarming personality and effortless fashion sense made her a true fashion icon. Timeless and classic.
My style inspiration book is definitely The Little Black Book of Style by Nina Garcia. I’ve read it quite a few times!
What is your favourite style trend at the moment?
Personally I love animal print. Any classic and stylish animal print is a firm favourite. I also like the oversize Victorian sleeve tops and square toe heels that are a style trend this year. An A-line printed skirt is definitely also a go-to clothing item for me!
Name the one wardrobe item you simply can’t live without.
Jeans! I own more jeans than shoes! I usually wear fitted / straight jeans or skinny jeans and I love their versatility. Jeans can be paired with heels and a jacket for a dressy look or with a white T-shirt and flat shoes for a more casual look.
What is your favourite thing about Hong Kong?
Hong Kong is such an amazing and vibrant city and we love living on Lantau Island. My favourite things include safety, the community, our friends, hiking trails, beautiful beaches, Dim Sum, bubble tea, the Star Ferry and brunch at Zuma.
What do you miss most about South Africa?
Definitely my family and friends. And also biltong, droëwors, Speckled Eggs, Woolies, Haute Cabrière Chardonnay Pinot Noir, Nik Naks, vetkoek and Spar’s melktert.
What is your favourite place in South Africa?
Blouberg Strand in the Western Cape.
What is your favourite South African expression or saying?
“Kom ons braai!”
