We’ve all had our fair share of hair dramas in Hong Kong (especially the blondes out there). Lucky for us, South African beauty industry veteran, Rennie Fensham, has been working her magic in the 852 since 2004, taking over the city one good cut and colour at a time. 

Where in South Africa were you born?

I was born in Pretoria and grew up in the Kruger National Park / Phalaborwa area.

What brought you to Hong Kong and how long have you lived here?

I initially came to Hong Kong because of my husband’s job. We’ve been here on and off since 2004.

What did you do before coming to Hong Kong?

I had my own salon, as well as a modelling and deportment academy. I also worked on various media productions for Fremantle including events, pageants and television programmes, as well as magazine editorials.

Who is your fashion, hair or beauty inspiration?

My fashion inspiration is definitely Alexander McQueen. I absolutely love his out-of-the-box style. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love any type of skull design!

What is your favourite hair and beauty trend at the moment?

I’m loving that women nowadays are going natural and gracefully embracing their greys! For the younger women, I’m all about natural curls and bohemian styles at the moment.

In all your years in the industry, what is the one hair or make-up trend that you’ve just never been able to like?

Definitely plastered on foundation and flat hair.

Do you have a favourite iconic hairstyle or cut?

My top three styles are the Farah Fawcett, Lady Diana and Rachael (from Friends). I think I’ve probably done about 5000 of each over my thirty years in the business, but my signature style will definitely be the Victoria’s Secret soft curl look.

 

What is your favourite thing about Hong Kong?

I love the cultural diversity of this city. It’s such an interesting melting pot of different cultures and languages.

What do you miss most about South Africa?

The space, fresh air, nature and beautiful oceans.

What is your favourite place in South Africa?

A bench on Bloubergstrand with a swirly strawberry and vanilla ice cream cone with a flake.
