Mandela Day 2024

Mandela Day 2024

Join the Southern African Association of Hong Kong this Mandela Day and brighten up a child in need’s birthday by using your 67 minutes to put together a gift bag for the less fortunate children of Hong Kong.

What is Mandela Day?

This day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organisations to take time to reflect on Mandela’s values and principles and to make a positive impact in their own communities. On #MandelaDay2024, we urge you to identify those in need around you and do what you can to make a difference for them. It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.

How can I get involved in Hong Kong?

In keeping Nelson Mandela’s legacy alive, we will again be supporting one of society’s most vulnerable  – the children. We are donating gift bags to Birthday Happiness Asia to hand out at an upcoming birthday party for needy children. The recipients include children from ethnic minorities, children with special social and education needs, children living in caged homes and children living in sub-standard public housing. You can support these children in Hong Kong by putting together a gift bag to brighten up their birthday party.

Please put ONE of the following in each gift bag:

To ensure that all celebrants receive similar gifts, please include all the items listed below in your gift bag. Please note that no second-hand or previously loved items can be accepted.

How should I package the gift?

Please place all the items in a plastic or paper bag. SAAHK will provide all celebrants with backpacks that your gifts will be placed into. If you would like to receive feedback on the delivery and birthday party, please attach your name and email address to your delivery.

New or gently used items?

While we are great supporters of the circular economy, in this particular instance we kindly request that all donations be new items due to hygiene concerns.

Do I need to buy everything on the list?

In the spirit of fairness and uniformity, we aim to provide each celebrant with similar gift bags. Please ensure that your gift bag contains all the requested items. If you feel you would like to give more, please consider donating more than one gift bag.

Where can I buy all the things on the list?

Local stationery shops, Muji and ‘everything’ stores stock the items on the list. Daiso stores also stock these items, and are extremely reasonably priced.

How old are the recipients?

Parties are held for primary and secondary school students, so please keep age appropriate contents in mind putting together your gift bags.

Girls or boys?

Please try to buy gender-neutral goodies as far as possible to make your gift bag more versatile, however if you would like to make a gift bag for a specific gender, please feel free to do so.

About Birthday Happiness Asia

Birthday Happiness Asia brings joy to less fortunate children in Hong Kong by organising their birthday celebrations with cake, decorations, games, and gifts. They work with partnering organisations such as Caritas, SoCo and The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong to nominate celebrants who cannot afford to celebrate their birthdays. A birthday party is then organised, and the celebrant can invite their friends and family to join them for an unforgettable day. These birthday parties provide vulnerable children, who live otherwise challenging lives, with long-lasting happy memories of their birthdays – something every child deserves.

Thank you for making a child’s birthday extra special this Mandela Day!
